On Saturday I hosted an Upholstery workshop at the centre for Craft IARD Parc Glynllifon the aim of the day course was to teach the participants how to traditionally upholster their own small footstool from  the frame up.
Using solid beech frames, made from locally sourced timber and hand-turned legs by a bespoke furniture maker in Denbigh, North Wales, all traditional fillings, hessian and fibre, cotton flock and calico.

The participants had a choice of fabrics selected from the studio especially for the event and extra Welsh wool blanket fabric, to continue the welsh theme.

I guided them through the process of learning how to apply webbing, hessian, stitching their fibre in, creating a nice shape with calico for the top fabric, buttoning and finishing ready to take home and put their feet up on!

With a bit of homemade flapjack to fuel their work, and kept warm by the cosy log burner in the room at IARD,  they produced some lovely pieces, see the team photo above. All different, all with their own character to somehow reflect that of the maker.

We are looking at booking some more workshops so add yourself to our mailing list on our website here to find out when the next one will be on.

A couple of video clips from the event are here on my Vimeo feed, have a little look!

Chaise Longue

the chaise before refurb

the frame after stripping down

rebuilding in process

Ta Dah! the finished piece complete with matching cushion and footstool
In between other smaller jobs and things like the pop-up-shop, I have been working on this large chaise. It required a lot of attention, and was given some serious TLC to bring it back to life - but I think its done the trick...just look at her now! Resplendent in bright pink and red with lime green piped trim to make it pop. Complete with bolster cushion to match and she's good to go.

Escaping the Attic

After long deliberation and a LOT of  research, I have made the executive decision to become a properly qualified Upholsterer! Yeah! Taking the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers) diploma course at the Traditional Upholstery Workshop in Carmarthenshire.
Its a course in 2 parts, each lasting 7 weeks. The first installment to start on Monday 18th July (Which is also my birthday- so it has to be a good start!)

Having never been to this part of the country before, I'm looking forward to spending some time there and discovering a bit more of Wales.

I am going to document my progress and keep a photo diary, blogging about my progress through the course and the projects I'll be working on.
Fingers crossed my accommodation has internet -  South Wales here I come!
 To Be Continued...
